The 1965 Corvette was Chevrolet’s answer to the industry wide horsepower race and the threat from European sports car manufacturers. The new 396 cubic inch, 425 horsepower engine was the first available in the Corvette with more than 400 horsepower; standard 4 wheel disc brakes proved to be far superior on the racetrack than the drum brakes used in previous years. This Corvette still retains its numbers matching 396 and 4 speed transmission; side pipes, stiffer front and rear sway bars, super heavy duty clutch, and a larger radiator round out its list of options included with the L78 package.
